Crazy Happy
We haven’t seen anyone having this much fun in a long, long time.
Straight out of the warehouses of Brooklyn, circa 2004, Matt and Kim have crashed the sometimes-dreary indie scene with their infectious energy and apparently indelible good humor. Since indie label IHeartComix Records released the band’s self-titled debut album in 2006, their love affair with music and each other has seen Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino through thousands of gigs, tens of thousands of miles — including the F-Yeah tour on a veggie-oil-powered school bus — Lollapalooza, and appearances on MTV2 and MTV Europe.
The duo built their sophomore album Grand, released Jan 20, 2009, “beginning [in] 2007 with playing a keyboard in a winter coat and cut off gloves, sitting in a Vermont bedroom with no heat in December. Ending in 2008, mixing wearing only underwear, sweating at 5 am in a Brooklyn apartment with no air conditioning, after staying up all night in August,” Matt said in a note at the band’s MySpace page. Their DIY spirit endears them to us as much as their genuine grins.
